Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Recognizes Student-Athletes

This weekend, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame recognized the state’s outstanding student-athletes for excellence and dedication on the field to their sports and off the field to their communities. The high school students honored at the event were selected through an open nomination process. Three of the 16 honorees from across the state represented York County high schools - Grace Hoepfner (GHS), Margaret Tulloss (THS), and Alexis Morales (THS). Tabb Middle School FIRST Lego League Team

Tabb Middle School's FIRST Lego League team advanced to the state competition in December. 11 students in grades 6, 7 and 8 worked after school and Saturdays throughout the first quarter of the school year to engineer a Lego Robot. The robot must perform challenge missions presented to them through the FIRST Lego League competition. Additionally, they identified a problem related to the human water cycle, and designed and shared a solution for harvesting rainwater. In addition to this competition aspects, team members are part of a larger robotics club at Tabb Middle and will help teach other students how to build and program Lego robots in the spring. Grafton High School Students Selected to VMEA Honors Choir

Three Grafton High School students were recently selected to represent the school at the prestigious VMEA Honors Choir event, which held auditions this weekend. More than 700 students from across Virginia auditioned for 100 spots. This is the highest achievement that a choral singer can receive during their high school years. 2018 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

We are pleased to share that three students have been selected as 2018 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. The program is based upon student performance on the PSAT taken during a student’s junior year. Congratulations to Grafton High's Annie Cao and Rachel Olson as well as Tabb High's Jenny Gu. Approximately 1.6 million students, in more than 22,000 high schools around the country, entered the program by taking the 2016 PSAT. Of those, approximately 16,000 students were named semifinalists and can compete for National Merit Scholarships that together are worth more than $33 million and will be awarded next spring. TMS Teacher Named Virginia Region II Teacher of the Year

Please join us in congratulating Theresa Goltermann, Tabb Middle School, who was just named the Virginia Region II Teacher of the Year! Dr. Victor Shandor, division superintendent, and Dr. Steven Constantino, asst. superintendent for instruction for the Virginia Department of Education, division administrators, and school board member Jimmy Richardson made the surprise announcement in front of the school's entire student body today. Mrs. Golternmann now represents 16 school divisions from throughout Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore as one of 8 finalists for Virginia Teacher of the Year! YCSD Earns 14 VIP Awards

Governor Terry McAuliffe and the Virginia Board of Education have released the 2017 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) awards. This year, 13 schools and the division earned a VIP award. Even more impressive is that two schools, Coventry and Mt. Vernon, have been honored each year since the program’s inception. Four elementary schools – Coventry, Mt. Vernon, Tabb and Waller Mill – earned the Board of Education’s Excellence Award. This award recognizes schools that have met all state and federal accountability benchmarks and made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by the board. The state honored 146 schools with this award. Nine schools – Bethel Manor Elementary, Dare Elementary, Grafton Bethel Elementary, Seaford Elementary, Grafton Middle, Tabb Middle, Grafton High, Tabb High, and York High – earned the Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award for meeting all state and federal benchmarks and made progress toward the goals of the governor and the board. 231 schools across the state received this award. YCSD was also one of only 15 school systems in the state to earn the award as a division. Read more Read more

Seaford Elementary Quiz Bowl

Fourth grade students at Seaford Elementary School competed in their annual Quiz Bowl Competition on Thursday, June 8. The students studied the Virginia Studies SOL essential knowledge from flash cards with a question and answer throughout the year to help prepare for the SOL. The students are then chosen to represent their class in the competition. Those not on the class team still participated by trying to answer the questions themselves. This year, while it was a tight contest, students in Wendy Jones’ class were named the winning team. Read more Read more

York High School Principal Named PTA Power Partner

Congratulations to York High School (YHS) Principal Shannon Butler who has just been named a Virginia PTA Power Partner principal! The PTA program recognizes principals and superintendents from across the state who have shown that a strong family-school partnership is key to student success. Dr. Butler will be honored at the Virginia PTA annual conference in Richmond on July 14. “This is such a well-deserved honor for Dr. Butler. To receive this award in her second year of leading a high school is certainly commendable,” shared YCSD Superintendent Victor Shandor, Ed.D. "She has dedicated a significant amount of time building relationships with not only students and staff but with parents, community members, and business partners. Additionally, she has created various opportunities for her high school students and staff to increase their engagement with their feeder elementary and middle schools.
